It’s rivalry week for the Wilmington schools in high school basketball with some big games across the Mideastern Conference scheduled for tonight and Friday.
The Vikings travel crosstown to Brogden Hall for a date with New Hanover. New Hanover County Schools TV will be live streaming both the boys and girls games. Girls tip off at 6 p.m, followed by the boys. Laney heads to Monkey Junction to face Ashley.
Local teams returned to the floor for the first time in 2016 last week ahead of tonight’s rematch in girls hoops from the championship game at the 22nd Annual Leon Brogden Holiday Tournament. Both coaches admit their teams didn’t play their best in a 33-27 decision for the Vikings, but Tuesday’s contest will give the winner a one-game lead in what looks to be a two-team race for top spot in the division.
On the boys’ side, New Hanover takes its 4-0 unbeaten mark in conference into a matchup against a Hoggard team that was able to grab a key road win against South Brunswick this past Friday. Laney edged Ashley 45-44 at this year’s Brogden Tourney in the first of three scheduled matchups this season, but the Screaming Eagles own a 6-1 mark on their home floor.
The Screaming Eagles had a few extra days of practice late last week after getting Friday night off. West Brunswick, South Brunswick and Topsail all get back into action on Friday.
Listed below are up-to-date Mideastern Conference standings heading into another full slate of games through Jan. 15. Local schools will also play in the annual Martin Luther King Jam at Union High School on Monday, Jan. 18, during the holiday.
Over the weekend, the Laney wrestling team continued its success by clinching the OBX Battle of the Beach Duals at First Flight High School in Kill Devil Hills.
The Bucs won six dual meets to move their season record to 26-0. Kevin Saravia was voted Most Outstanding Wrestler as 10 different individuals from Laney claimed titles in their respective weight class.
Saravia (113 pounds), Sean Panas (120 pounds), Jesse Taylor (132 pounds), David Bostian (138 pounds), Dallas Thompson (152 pounds), Austin Nalley (160 pounds), Hunter Starling (182 pounds), Alex Willis (220 pounds) and Matthew Scott (285 pounds) all went a perfect 7-0 during the event.
