New Hanover County will have golfers from Ashley, Hoggard and Laney representing the area at Pinehurst No. 1 as the Mideastern Conference champion Screaming Eagles has three players going to 4A tournament after finishing third in last week’s central regional.

Led by junior Katy Flax, Ashley’s Darby Bagshaw and Alex Milotis are set to tee off in staggered groups along with individual qualifiers Caroline Cahill (Laney), freshman Anna Moore (Hoggard) and senior Ali Cole (Hoggard).

Cahill placed fourth in the regional, three shots behind Flax, who posted a 77 to finish second on the individual leaderboard.

Brunswick County will have two golfers at the two-day 3A State Championship at Longleaf Pine and Country Club in Southern Pines as regional champion Cameryn Smith (West Brunswick) competes along with South Brunswick’s Jordan Saunders.

Smith picked up a one stroke victory at Carolina National to finish atop the leaderboard with a 73, while Saunders clinched a spot in the state tournament with an 85 to claim fourth place at last week’s regional event.

The best three scores for a team, which may have up to five individuals, are counted each day toward the team total. The championship courses are set with par at 72 for the 1-A/2-A (5,703 yards) and 3-A (5,659 yards) and at 70 for the 4-A at Pinehurst (5,539 yards).
