Ashley earned 166.5 points and the boys title on their own track.

Laney, behind a busy and productive day from their 4×100 and 4×200 relay teams and a first-place finish by Kion Hobdy finished second with 135.75 points.

In the girls competition Jamie Stacey won the 100- and 200-meter dashes, Destiny Godfrey added a first-place finish in the 400, and Heather Keck added 10 points by winning the pole vault as the Ashley girls captured their first conference title in school history with 143 points, seven better than runner-up New Hanover which was second with 136.

Laney finished third with 130 points.

“It’s enormous for the girls. It’s the first time in school history the girls have won the county title and I am really excited for them,” Ashley Coach Ryan Hauck said. “And I am extremely pleased with the boys’ effort. A lot of things didn’t go our way early but a lot of kids stepped up and put themselves in a good position and it was a good tune-up for next week.”

Originally the meet results were compiled and sent out late last evening. But after a review of the coaches the results were adjusted. Hauck said that’s something that often occurs when it comes to track and field results.

“What tends to happen with meets like this is that things have to be double-checked and it often happens some time later after the meet is finished,” Hauck said. “There were changes made in the girls pole vault and with the times in the 4×400 relay and it changed the results.”

Laney Coach Sam Bobbitt was equally pleased with the way his teams performed, accentuating the fact that anything can happen in the upcoming meets.

“I think the both teams showed up and performed well,” Bobbitt said. “I haven’t had a chance to look through the results but I thought the relays did really well. There were a lot of people that stepped up and did a lot of good things and that’s encouraging with what is coming up the rest of the year.”

Kerry Leonard cruised to victory in both the 800 (2:26.44) and the 1,600 (5:18.95).

“I was really going to do all three (800, 1,600, 3,200) and I’ll be doing that next week (Mideastern Conference Championship) so I felt okay,” Leonard said. “I haven’t raced with the girls that much this season. I usually race with the guys. It doesn’t count for anything on MileSplit, but to me it does because I can get the time under my belt and it gets easier.

“I was kind of nervous running with the girls for the first time because I didn’t know what to expect, maybe they would try to run with me but I felt really good. I’m not too sure what I am going to do for the regional and state meet. I wasn’t too sure about the 800 because it’s not my best race but I’m leaning toward doing both.

Jamie Stacey won the 100 (12.7) and the 200 (26.1) for the Lady Screaming Eagles, edging teammate Destiny Godfrey (12.9 in the 100 and 266) in the 200. Godfrey gave her team 10 more points with a 1:00.6 first-place finish in the 400. Suggs and Godfrey joined forces with Rhaven Davis and Alyssa Yaw to win the 4×400 relay in 4:21.7, adding another 10 points to the scoring ledger.

Keck won the pole vault for Ashley, and sophomore Julia Boudreau contributed 14 points to the historic win with a third in the 800 (2:34.1), a fourth in the 1,600 (5:42.6), and the anchor leg on Ashley’s second-place (10:53.0 behind the 10:21.3 first-place time of Hoggard).

Kion Hobdy won the 100 in 11.06 and anchored the winning 4×100 relay (43.83) and 4×200 relay (1:32.37) – teaming with Trey Smith, Alex Newkirk, and Imeek Watkins in the 4×100 and the same threesome in the 4×200.

Corbett and Banoczi switched places in the throwing events with Corbett winning the shot (47-4) with Banoczi second (46-9), and Banoczi winning the discus (151-06) with his teammate second at 122-07.

The Screaming Eagles also scored big in the pole vault with Bruce Kopka (12-0) first, Daniel Suggs (10-6) second, Eric Lehman (9-8) third, and Luka Abraham (9-0) sixth.

The Mideastern Conference meet is scheduled for next Thursday at Hoggard with a start time at approximately 3:30 p.m. The 4A regional meet will be at Hoggard on Friday and Saturday (May 2-3).
