WILMINGTON — It was a sweltering evening that heated up even more when Tedeschi Trucks Band hit the Live Oak Bank Pavilion stage on Thursday, Sept. 7.
The band played through two sets, peppering in newer tunes off their latest and fifth-studio album, “I Am the Moon.” The release contains four albums and was written during the downtime of the Covid-19 pandemic, “inspired by an ancient poem of star-crossed lovers,” according to the band.
The 12-member group also performed fan-favorites from “Midnight in Harlem” and a few covers thrown for good measure. The Allman Brothers’ Band were highlighted with songs like “Keep on Smiling by Wet Willie” and “Come and Go Blues.”
Derek Trucks (guitar) played with ABB from 1999 through the mid-2000s. It was in 2010 when he started Tedeschi Trucks Band with his wife, Susan Tedeschi (guitar, vocals).
Gabe Dixon (keyboards, vocals), Brandon Boone (bass), Tyler “Falcon” Greenwell (drums, percussion), Isaac Eady (drums, percussion), Mike Mattison (vocals, guitar), Mark Rivers (vocals), Alecia Chakour (vocals), Kebbi Williams (saxophone), Ephraim Owens (trumpet), and Elizabeth Lea (trombone) also make up the group.
They’re well-known for a roots sound that crosses American jazz, country and blues. The band was joined onstage with a guest appearance by guitar virtuoso Eric Johnson for the encore. Johnson played the same night at UNCW’s Kenan Auditorium.
