KURE BEACH — To make up for lost pandemic time, the Pleasure Island Chamber of Commerce is hosting a series of free drive-in concerts at the Fort Fisher Air Force Recreation Area.
Typically, the chamber hosts a concert series over the summer, but now with relaxed Covid-19 restrictions, concert-goers can socially distance from their cars or lawn chairs at the drive-in series.

The series kicked off Friday, Oct. 23, with the classic rock band, Spank. More than 130 cars lined the field in front of the stage, with many attendees popping their trunks, sitting in the bed of their trucks, hanging out in golf carts, or sitting in lawn chairs to enjoy the show.
Live music can be heard by rolling down car windows or by tuning to a pre-set radio signal.
Volunteers open up gates at 5:30 p.m. to begin filing in cars on the field ahead of the show. The chamber asks that once cars are parked, they remain in the same spot until the show is over.
Three more concerts are planned, with the next scheduled Friday, Oct. 30. Each concert will take place from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. All shows will be located at the Fort Fisher Air Force Recreation Area in Kure Beach.
CONCERT SCHEDULE:
- Friday, Oct. 30 — Feebs (“jazz, blues, rock, folk and most things in between”)
- Friday, Nov. 20 — Polar Bear Blues Band (“powerful rhythm and blisterin’ blues”)
- Friday, Dec. 4 — Southern Trouble (“country rock”)
