WILMINGTON — It is time for spring cleaning. As you sort through drawers and closets this spring, remember that your used eyeglasses can bring sight to people in need in many countries in the world.
Your contributions of used eyeglasses, sunglasses, hearing aids, cell phones and gently used ball hats are a great help to the recycling project of the Wilmington Lions Club.
Recently, the Wilmington Lions Club sorted and boxed 3,138 pairs of glasses, 725 pairs of sunglasses, 35 gently used ball hats, 35 cell phones and three hearing aids.
The eyeglasses, sunglasses and hats will be shipped to the School of Optometry at Ohio State University, where members of SVOSH will clean, sort the glasses by prescription and prepare them for overseas missions.
SVOSH at The Ohio State University College of Optometry is a student chapter of Volunteer Optometric Services Humanity. VOSH is a non-profit organization on a mission to bring vision to every person on the planet.
Lion Dr. Jamie Casper, faculty advisers and the student members of SVOSH will dispense these glasses when they examine and treat needy people in a third world country next summer.
The hearing aids will be sent to NC Lions Inc. for recycling. The cell phones and ink cartridges are recycled to help pay for vision exams for local needy residents.
The hats? The student volunteers of SVOSH have found that the ball hats are in great demand to aid in protecting vision for clients in the Caribbean, Central America and South America.
Look for Lions Recycling Boxes in all Walmarts and many optical shops in the greater Wilmington area. We collect and recycle eyeglasses, sunglasses, reading glasses, cell phones, hearing aids, gently used ball hats and ink cartridges.
