WILMINGTON — Crime Stoppers of the Lower Cape Fear is offering up to a $5,000 reward for information that could lead to the arrest of the individuals responsible for stealing thousands of dollars’ worth of tires, wheels, and cars from several local car dealerships over the past eight months.

Since June 2016, there have been a total of nine such incidents reported, concentrated between South College Road and Market Street, according to Wilmington Police Department Spokeswoman Cathryn Lindsay.

The last incident took place late Monday night at Jeff Gordon Chevrolet, located at 228 S. College Road. This is the second time the dealership has been hit, Lindsay said. Jeff Gordon Chevrolet also had another incident in November 2016.

Other car dealerships that have been victims of the thefts include Land Rover Lower Cape Fear at 20 Old Eastwood Road; Capital Ford Lincoln of Wilmington at 4222 Oleander Drive; Capital Nissan of Wilmington at 5501 Market St.; and Wilmington Neuwirth Motors at 219 S. College Road.

Police suspect the same crew, possible made up of multiple individuals, are responsible for the series of dealership thefts, Lindsay said. The suspects are also damaging other vehicles on the lots to be able to steal the tires and wheels.

Two cars have also been taken from the dealerships over the last eight months, Lindsay said.
