OAK ISLAND — Betty High McKee, 87, passed away Saturday, Jan. 14, 2017.
Mrs. McKee was born June 13, 1929, in Whiteville, the daughter of the late Thomas J. High and Bertha G. High. She worked for Newport News Shipbuilding in Virginia for 27 years.
She retired in 1987 and moved to Oak Island, where she was an active member of Oak Island Presbyterian Church. She served as the Sunday school superintendent for several years, taught children’s Sunday school and served in the community as a Stephen Minister.
Mrs. McKee was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Boyd Lamar McKee; and a sister, Wilbur Smith of Rockingham.
Survivors include her two sons, Michael B. McKee of San Jose, Calif., and Ronald W. McKee of Hampton, Va.; granddaughter, Paige Robbins, and her husband, Charles “Chuck” Robbins; four great-grandchildren, Chase, Regan, Ashley and Andrew; sister, Dorothy Ballard of Wilmington; three brothers, James High, and his wife, Kathleen, of Burnsville, N.C., Rudolph High and his wife, Violet, of Greenville, N.C., and Harold High of Hamlet, N.C.; and nine nieces, three nephews and several great-nieces and great-nephews.
A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 20, at the Peacock-Newnam & White Funeral Home Chapel, Southport. Burial will follow in Oleander Memorial Gardens, Wilmington. The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.
