Plan ahead: Streets to close in downtown Wilmington for the annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day Parade

WILMINGTON — A celebration and remembrance of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. will commence in downtown Wilmington with the city’s annual parade on Monday.

The Martin Luther King Jr. Day parade will begin at 11 a.m. at Cape Fear Community College’s Schwartz Center, according to the City of Wilmington. From there, the parade will travel south down Third Street, east on Princess Street and then north on Fourth Street to Brunswick Street.

In preparation for the parade, North Third Street will close to traffic starting at 9 a.m., the city stated in a release. Downtown traffic will have to use Front Street or Fifth Avenue to detour from the parade route.

Southbound Third Street at Front and Davis streets, as well as Brunswick and Hanover streets, will close at 9 a.m. for parade line up and bleacher placement.

The parade will queue on Brunswick and Hanover streets, between Second and Third streets. All Streets crossing the parade route will also close at 9 a.m.

All traffic headed downtown from the east or south will have to use Market or Wooster streets to get to Third Street. The downtown area west of Third Street will be accessible via Market or Front streets.

If your headed to the downtown parade, arrive early to find a parking spot. All on-street parking will be free on Monday. But, the city’s downtown parking decks will be charging regular rates for parking.

Use the map of the parade route to plan where you may be able to catch the parade. The parade will end at about 3 p.m. Monday.
