WILMINGTON — The Children’s Museum gave children a chance to relive a holiday classic on Saturday.

Despite rain early in the day, the Sudan Shriners of Wilmington provided children and their parents a train ride on the Shiner Choo Choo before taking them to visit Santa. South of the Arctic Circle, it was as close as most children will get to experiencing the namesake route of Chris Van Allsburg’s 1985 “The Polar Express.”

Outside, as families waiting for their turn on the train, the Hanover Singers from the choir of Hanover High School, performed carols.

Inside, children made Christmas ornaments, wrote letters to Santa and enjoyed hot cocoa and met some life-sized gingerbread men. But this was all just a prelude to the main event – a one-on-one meeting with the man himself. As one child remarked, “holy cow, he’s here, he’s really here.”
