For 11-year old Ella Johnson of Wrightsville Beach Elementary School, there’s nothing better than some homemade Mac and Cheese and French fries.
The rising soccer star recently played at the Disney World Soccer Showcase in Orlando, Florida alongside her teammates as part of the Wilmington Hammerheads FC Youth organization.
World Cup star and Olympic Gold Medalist Carli Lloyd has motivated and inspired thousands of young girls across the country to be all they can be. Johnson is on that list, but when she’s not following her favorite teams-the United States National Women’s Soccer Team or Bacelona FC across the pond-Ella is watching the Alabama Crimson Tide.
And Ella isn’t attached to the TV. Guess what? She likes to play outside with her friends. She also likes to read and write.
Listed below are her responses to a brief question and answer survey handed out to all of our Youth Spotlight honorees.
Name: Ella Johnson
Age: 11- 5th Grade
School: Wrightsville Beach Elementary
Sport(s) played: Soccer. I also like to run when not playing soccer.
Favorite coach and why? Craig Johnson (CJ), my soccer coach. CJ is like family to me, and I think my whole team would agree. On and off the field he is there for us. I probably wouldn’t be where I am if it wasn’t for him. He cares so much about us. For example I broke my arm one time and had to get a pin inserted because the break was so bad. Even though he was working in a different hospital and it was very early in the morning, he went by just to see me. If you were to ask a genie for the perfect coach, you would get CJ. There are a gazillion more reasons why he is the best but I have don’t have enough time to name them all! I could never ever ask for a better coach. Me and my team absolutely LOVE CJ!
Favorite athlete: Carli Lloyd, US Women’s National Soccer team and World Cup Champion. I also like Lionel Messi with FC Barcelona.
Favorite sports team: USA Women’s National Soccer team/FC Barcelona
Favorite sport to watch other than the one you play: College Football. Roll Tide!
Most memorable experience on the field/court: When the final whistle blew at the Disney Cup, and our team going absolutely CRAZY because we won! This win was really neat because our team beat a team from Miami, Tampa Bay, Raleigh and two teams from Atlanta to win. We played a team from Atlanta in the finals. This tournament took place over the Thanksgiving holiday and it was so exciting to experience and play this level of competition. Our team had no idea what to expect so we just played our hearts out. Our team is the first girls team in the history of the Hammerheads soccer club to win this tournament! Go Hammerheads!!
Favorite food: Homemade Mac and Cheese, french fries and apples
Favorite school subject: Math and Writing.
Favorite teacher and why?: My fourth grade teacher who was Danni Hayes, because she is super fun, encouraging and patient. She also loves music, so sometimes in our classroom we would play instruments and it would get loud. She really taught me a lot!
Favorite TV show: “ESPN/ Kickin’ It,” “Cupcake Wars,” “Chopped”
Favorite thing you like to do outside of sports: I like to: 1) play with my friends around the neighborhood 2) art projects and 3) read and write! I also like to cook and bake. Mostly, I really love to play outside/outside games!
