UNC-Wilmington men’s soccer clinches home game in CAA Championship

WILMINGTON — The UNCW men’s soccer team clinched its fifth straight Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) postseason berth following a 0-0 draw this week at Elon in the regular season finale for both teams.

The scoreless tie allowed the Seahawks to secure a spot in the CAA Championship field, while improving to 8-5-3 overall and 3-2-3 in the division. Meanwhile, Elon sealed the fourth seed moving to 7-5-4 on the season, with an identical 3-2-3 mark in league play.

The top six sides in the regular season standings get a spot in the tournament as Hofstra clinched the top seed and earned the right to host the semifinals and final, November 11-13, at Hofstra Soccer Stadium.  The Pride (9-7-1; 7-1-0 CAA) and No. 2 seed Delaware (10-7-1; 5-3-0 CAA) both received quarterfinal byes.

Quarterfinal action is set for Saturday, Nov. 5, with No. 3 UNCW (8-5-3; 3-2-3 CAA) hosting No. 6 College of Charleston (5-8-3; 3-3-2 CAA). The match will kick off at 6 p.m. inside the UNCW Soccer Stadium.

No. 4 Seed Elon (7-5-4; 3-2-3 CAA) plays at home against No. 5  seed William & Mary (10-6-2; 3-3-2 CAA).

Both games will be contested on campus sites of the higher seeds. The winners of those two contests advance to the semifinals on Nov. 11 in Hempstead, N.Y.

UNCW will play its first home game in the tournament since 2009 come Saturday. The Cougars and Seahawks tied, 1-1, during the regular season. The winner faces No. 2 Delaware in the CAA semifinals.
