A Brunswick County man — thought to have been holding a woman against her will for several days — has been charged with one of two Saturday morning shooting incidents in Supply.
Dwight Sylvester Powell Jr., 29, of Makatoka Road, Supply, turned himself in to the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office without incident Thursday afternoon, according to officials with the sheriff’s office. He faces a single charge of shooting into an occupied dwelling for a shooting that damaged a home in the 2100 block of Daisy Trial in Supply at about 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 27.
Powell is also a person of interest in another Saturday morning shooting that later turned into a missing persons case.
Police say that, at about 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, another shooting was reported about 5 miles away from the Daisy Trail home. This one was near the intersection of Cedar Grove and Stone Chimney roads. Powell was also a person of interest in that shooting and was believed to have left the scene with Shayla Da’nia Bryant and her 1-year-old son, Alijah.
Bryant and her toddler were reported missing by her family after the Cedar Grove Road incident. Detectives later found Bryant’s 2003 Honda Pilot three days later near the scene as they searched for Bryant, her son and Powell, who was wanted for questioning.
Bryant and her son were safely located by authorities Thursday afternoon. Powell was ultimately charged in the Daisy Road shooting and was taken into custody by the sheriff’s office.
According to an investigation report from the Daisy Road incident, deputies were dispatched to the home after a neighbor reported hearing five to six shots fired. It was reported that an individual inside a black SUV fire shots toward the front and rear side of the home and then drove away from the scene at a “high rate of speed.” Several shell casings were found near the residence.
No one has been charged in the Cedar Grove Road shooting. Authorities say both shooting investigations are ongoing.
