dress auction 1WILMINGTON — Your chance to go couture could have just been cut short.

A planned New Hanover County Sheriff’s Department auction of 3,000 dresses and accessories scheduled for Saturday at Independence Mall has been canceled.

Lt. Jerry Brewer, public information officer for the Sheriff’s Department, said the auction was canceled because the defendant has filed for bankruptcy.

The dresses included formal wear, bridal dresses, pageant dresses, footwear and jelewry that had been part of a seizure due to liens. Brand names included Tony Bowls, Mac Duggal, Jovani, Terani, Sherri Hill, Heather French Henry, and Claire’s Collection.

“It’s a possibility, the bankruptcy could be denied,” Brewer said. “If that ends up being the case, we’ll reschedule.”
