WILMINGTON — Jimmy Louis “Jim” Glass, 83, died Wednesday, April 12, 2017, at home.
Jim was born May 19, 1933, in Surry County, N.C., son of the late Charlie N. Glass and Leliar Ethel Johnson Glass.
Jim graduated from Mt. Airy High School in Surry County and the National Business School in Virginia prior to serving in the U.S. Army. Jim continued his education at UNC Chapel Hill, graduating Phi Beta Kappa with a degree in business administration.
Jim’s working career was spent in financial management, primarily in textile machine manufacturing and later the international transportation industry and petroleum distribution.
Retirement gave Jim the opportunity to tend his flower and vegetable gardens, refine his baking skills, enjoy more time on the beach with family and to become more involved with volunteer opportunities.
Jim was member of the First Baptist Church and the Wells Sunday School Class. Through the church, he became involved with the Jail Ministry, which became his primary focus. He taught Sunday school at the jail, corresponded with inmates, visited them in distant prisons and offered support to those adjusting post-release. Jim truly felt he was called to serve in this ministry.
He is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Peggy Glass; daughter, Michelle Ligon (George) of Boone, N.C.; son, Samuel Glass of St. Petersburg, Fla.; two grandchildren, Sommer Barnes and Isaac Barnes; brother, Tom Glass (Pat) of Asheboro, N.C.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, April 17, at Andrews Market Street Chapel with Dr. Frank Hawkins officiating. Prior to the service, the family will greet friends from 1 to 2 p.m. prior to the service. Interment will follow in Oleander Memorial Gardens.
Contributions in Jim’s memory may be made to the Jail Ministry of First Baptist Church, 411 Market St., Wilmington, NC 28401.
