WILMINGTON — Joseph J. Fries, 89, passed away Monday, March 20, 2017, at home surrounded by his loving family.

Born Feb. 28, 1928, in Richmond Hill, Queens, N.Y., he is the son of the late Joseph J Fries Sr. and Alice Budrie Fries. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Clifford Fries of College Park, Md.

Mr. Fries is survived by his wife of 66 years, Joan Parsons Fries; son, Christopher Joseph Fries, and his partner, Debi Smallwood Rose; daughters, Paula Jean Fries, and her husband, Christian Caputo, and Nora Fries Clancy, and her husband, Thomas Clancy; granddaughter, Sarah Fries Gilley, and her husband, Nicholas Gilley; grandson, Sean Wheeler; step-grandchildren, Letitia and Allison Clancy and Jeffrey Gardner; great-grandchildren, Falon and Nola Gilley; sister, Judy Handkammer; and many loving nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and neighbors.

Mr. Fries was proud to serve in the U.S. Navy as a seaman second class during World War II from 1946 through 1947. He worked as the art director for Construction Methods & Equipment for over 23 years, a former publication of McGraw-Hill in Manhattan, N.Y. He was an active member of the Knights of Columbus, and a proud Democrat. Mr. Fries was a lifelong Giants and Rangers fan, an avid Notre Dame fan, and an artist member of the Wilmington Arts Council. He will be remembered as a truly amazing man – a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend.

A wake will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, March 22, at Andrews Mortuary Hampstead Chapel. A funeral Mass will be held at noon Friday, March 24, at St. Therese Catholic Church, Wrightsville Beach. A reception will follow at the church for family and friends.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the charity of your choice. Some family suggestions: Association for Mental Health and Wellness, Planned Parenthood, Natural Resource Defense Council and Lower Cape Fear Hospice.
