Long ball lifts UNC-Wilmington baseball to series sweep over VCU

WILMINGTON – Senior shortstop Kennard McDowell collected three hits, including his second home run of the season, and drove in three runs as UNCW finished off a three-game sweep of VCU with four home runs in a 10-1 win on Sunday at Brooks Field.

The Seahawks are winners of four in a row and five of its last six to improve to 8-9 overall. UNCW outscored the Rams 25-9 during the non-conference rivalry meeting that dates back to 1971.

McDowell scored twice and held team-high honors with three hits. Casey Golden, Clark Cota and Nick Feight also homered in the game as the Seahawks has now it at least one long ball in each of its last eight games. Golden has left the yard in four straight contests to lift his team-high home run total to seven, while Cota smacked a round tripper in back-to-back contests against VCU.

Jordan Bissette (2-1), one of seven pitchers used Sunday for UNCW, picked up the win.

UNCW got rolling in the third inning as McDowell and Golden homered to open the frame. Mason Berne gave the Seahawks a 3-0 lead on an RBI ground out.

On Saturday, Logan Beehler grabbed his first win of the spring. He tossed five innings, while Cory Gantz and Austin Warren each threw two scoreless innings out of the bullpen en route to a 10-4 result. Gantz has not yet allowed a run this season and pitched four total frames over the weekend. Friday’s contest saw UNCW rally for four runs in the seventh in a 5-4 win.

The Seahawks (8-9) continue their home stand Tuesday with the first of two games against Maryland. Tuesday first pitch is set for 6 p.m. On Wednesday, UNCW and Terrapins square off in a 3:45p.m. match up.
