Police nab alleged shooter in Tuesday murder in Wilmington

WILMINGTON — The man wanted on charge of murder after allegedly gunning down a woman in broad daylight near S. 17th Street and Wrighstville Avenue Tuesday will make his first appearance in court today.

Joseph Cornell Corbett, 37, was arrested at 12:15 a.m. on Old Dow Road, according to jail records. He had been the target of a manhunt since the murder.

Police say Shantell Denise Williams, 42, of Wilmington, was shot near the area of South 17th Street and Wrightsville Avenue just before 4 p.m. on Tuesday.

When officers arrived at the scene, they found Williams lying on the sidewalk suffering from gunshot wounds. She was transported to New Hanover Regional Medical Center, where she died from her injuries.
