UPDATE: Wilmington police have identified the victim in the Thursday night homicide on Sebrell Avenue as 17-year-old Raymond Kain, according to a Tweet by the Wilmington Police Department on Saturday. The cause of the teen’s death is still unknown.

WILMINGTON — Wilmington police are investigating the murder of a 17-year-old boy Thursday night.

Detectives opened a homicide investigation after police responded to what was first believed to be a traffic collision involving a cyclist and a car in the 100 block of Sebrell Avenue at 11 p.m., according to Wilmington Police Department Spokeswoman Linda Thompson.

Police found the body of the 17-year-old male lying in the roadway at the scene. Detectives later determined that the victim’s fatal injuries were not the result of the traffic crash, Thompson said.

The police department did not release further details about the nature of the teen’s fatal injuries or why investigators have ruled out the traffic crash as a factor in the teen’s death. The name of the victim is also being withheld at this time.
