WILMINGTON — A 63-year-old pedestrian has died after being struck by a vehicle Wednesday evening.

According to Wilmington Police Department Spokeswoman Cathryn Lindsay, the wreck happened at the intersection of South Third and Castle streets at about 6:55 p.m. Wednesday.

The wreck happened when the man entered the roadway unlawfully, disregarding the “don’t walk” signal at the crosswalk, Lindsay said.

“The man’s actions were not visible because another vehicle that had stopped in the turn lane, shielded the view of the pedestrian from the view of the driver of the [oncoming] pickup truck,” Lindsay said.

Witnessed told police the man darted into the path of the pickup truck and the truck struck the pedestrian.

The 63-year-old man was taken to New Hanover Regional Medical Center where he died from his injuries.

Wilmington police have turned over their investigation to the district attorney’s office to see if any charges are warranted in the incident.
