Police identify man killed after falling out the back of a pickup truck

Gregorio Perez Mendoza has been charged in the death of a man who fell out of a truck he was driving.

WILMINGTON — Police have identified a Wilmington man who died after falling out of the back a pickup truck Saturday afternoon.

Arturo Arista Morales, 36, died at the scene at the intersection of Rutledge Drive and Graham Street, according to Wilmington Police Department Spokeswoman Cathryn  Lindsay.

The incident happened at about 3:45 p.m. Saturday. Police suspect Morales had been riding in an office chair in the bed of the pickup truck when he fell and hit his head on the asphalt.

Wilmington police have charged the driver of the truck – 34-year-old Gregorio Perez Mendoza – with driving while impaired, felony death by motor vehicle, driving with a suspended license and careless and reckless driving.

Mendoza was arrested and charged Saturday. He was booked at the New Hanover County jail under a $500,000 secured bond.
