WILMINGTON — Donald Walter Meyer, 85, was born March 5, 1931, and passed away at his residence Thursday, Feb. 9, 2017.
Donald was a native of Newell, S.D., and graduate of Newell High School. He earned a B.S. Degree in Business Administration and Accounting from Black Hills State University in Spearfish, S.D.
For more than 26 ½ years, Donald served his country by serving in the U.S. Air Force. He retired in January 1978 with a Meritorious Service Medal signed by the Secretary of the U.S. Air Force.
Throughout his life, Donald was always a firm believer and active Lutheran. He held positions in the church as usher, head usher, financial secretary and deacon. He was a present member of Messiah Lutheran Church and former member of St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church, both in Wilmington.
Donald enjoyed riding motorcycles with his sons and friends and tinkering with automobiles. He usually had an extra vehicle parked in the driveway for that purpose.
Donald was preceded in death by his oldest son, Donald Jr.; father and mother; and three sisters and brother.
Surviving are his wife of over 62 years, Audrey; son, Ronald, and his wife, Terri, of Wilmington; granddaughter, Aimee Meyer Norris, and her husband, Regan, of Columbia, S.C.; great-grandson, River Norris; and grandson, Nicholas Dean Meyer of Wilmington.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 18, at Messiah Lutheran Church with Pastor Timothy Steele officiating. The family will receive friends at the church from 10 a.m. until the service time Saturday. Military honors will be accorded by the U.S. Air Force. Graveside services will be held at a later time at the Pine Slope Cemetery in Belle Foursche, S.D.
