Harold Huffman “Hal” Foley, 88, always ready to offer a helping hand

SUNSET BEACH — Retired U.S. Army 1st Sgt. Harold Huffman Foley, 88, passed away on Sunday, Feb. 5, 2017, with his loving girls by his side. Mr. Foley was affectionately known to everyone as “Hal.”

Hal was born in Lexington, Ky., Dec. 28, 1928. Hal joined the military out of high school, where he continued his college education. He retired after 20 years of honorable service in the U.S. Army. During his U.S. Army career, Hal served in Korea with two tours during Vietnam.

Following his U.S. Army duty, he had a second career with Love Chevrolet in Columbia, S.C., and then retired to Ocean Isle Beach, N.C.

During retirement, Hal enjoyed many activities, including membership of the Sandpiper Bay Golf Club and the St. James Episcopal Church, where he served in various volunteer positions. Hal was an avid golfer and loved his South Carolina Gamecocks. Hal loved spending time with his family and friends. He never met a stranger and was always ready to offer a helping hand. Everyone who knew Hal loved him.

Hal was preceded in death by his son, Robert Neal Foley.

Surviving are his wife, Carolyn Foley; and three children, Susan Racher, John (Joanne) Foley and Sharon (Terry) Hudgins; and four grandchildren, Caroline Racher, Matthew Racher, Seth Hudgins and Scott Hudgins.

Family and friends will receive guests from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 9, at Brunswick Funeral Service. Mr. Foley will be honored by a full military service at 2 p.m. Friday, Feb. 10, at St. James Episcopal Church.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made to St. James Episcopal Church, 4941 Main St., Shallotte, N.C. 28470.
