WILMINGTON — A new fashion retailer is opening its doors at Mayfaire Town Center in just one week, bringing both “affordable” fashion shopping and jobs to the area.
Hennes & Mauritz (H&M), touted as one of the world’s largest fashion retailers, is opening its doors at 12 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 9, according to a news release from the retailer. The Wilmington location at 6835 Conservation Way, will join 11 other H&M locations across the state.
The buzz about the store’s possible arrival began in late 2015, followed by construction of the 24,000 sq. ft. building in 2016. The Swedish multi-national company sells” hip duds at low prices for men, women, children, teens, toddlers and infants,” according to the release.
The company has more than 3,700 locations worldwide and a total of 459 locations across the country, including 10 in North Carolina’s Triangle and Piedmont regions, as well as Asheville. The state has become a “growing market” for the chain in recent years.
“We are pleased to be opening a new location in North Carolina,” Daniel Kulle, U.S. President of H&M, said. “This state is a growing market and we are excited to create more job opportunities with our expansion there.”
The new H&M location will offer Wilmington residents a one-stop destination for clothing with “quality fashion at competitive prices” and collections for ladies and men, with a “store within a store” section for accessories. The Wilmington retailer will also carry the “H&M Kids” collection for children ranging in age from newborn to 10 years old.
“The variety of H&M collections make it easy for any consumer to find fashionable products, no matter their personal style. With an emphasis on design, quality, and sustainability, H&M offers inspiring, of-the-moment fashion at an unbeatable value,” the release states.
H&M is also touting the jobs is has created in Wilmington. According to the release, the retailer has employed 20 employees in the area, adding to the company’s 16,000 people employed nationwide, with plans to further expand its employment base. In celebration of the store’s opening, the first 100 people in line when the store opens at noon on Feb. 9 will receive “surprise offers.” Those will include the “H&M Access to Fashion Pass,” valued between $10 and $300.
Customers who garment recycle on opening day can also enter to win a gift card from $50 to $250 dollars. In 2013, H&M was the first global fashion company to launch in-store “Garment Recycling.” So far, it has collected approximately 90.4 million lbs. of garments, the release states.
