Youth Spotlight: Gregor Brock, Town Creek Elementary School student, turns 9 today

PortCityDaily.com is your source for free news and information in the Wilmington area.

Port City Daily highlights young athletes competing in a variety of sports to help showcase the talented youth across the Wilmington area. Each week, one youngster will be introduced to the local community for his or her efforts on and off the field, including some of his or her favorite things to do outside of sports and a list of what makes them who they are.

Being a coach’s son isn’t always easy. However, 9-year old Gregor Brock has relished the opportunity to stay close to his dad and begin to set a foundation which will one day not only make him a better athlete, but an even better person.

North Brunswick High School Football Coach Larry Brock has a long history when it comes to sports, from his college playing days at Appalachian State to competing in the Scottish Highland Games.  Young Gregor is a mirror image of his dad, just a bite-sized version of his favorite coach.

Celebrating his 9th birthday today, the Town Creek Elementary School student already has a ton of memorable experiences to hang his hat on. In July 2016, Brock represented Cape Fear Flyers at the 50th USA Track & Field (USATF) National Junior Olympic Track & Field Championships held in Sacramento, California. The trip out west brought back many recollections to the forefront for his dad, who competed in the same games during his sophomore year in high school.

Gregor Brock competed in the 8U division, and finished third in the shot put (18-feet, 6-inches) – the same event as his dad – and fourth in turbo javelin (56-feet, 2-inches). While competing at a high level is important to Gregor, being a good teammate is what matters most to the young lad. His most favorite thing to do while competing is watching his friends get medals from their meets.

Unlike most kids his age, who have favorite pro athletes and teams, Gregor spends so much time around the practice field in Leland his favorite athlete is North Brunswick High School senior Dakota Desfonds. Desfonds was a wing back on the Scorpions’ football team and pole vaulter on the North Brunswick indoor and outdoor track teams.

There’s no doubt if Gregor can continue to scarf his favorite foods — steak and shrimp — he could one day compete in his favorite sport to watch, Strongman competitions.

Outside of using his front yard as a track lane or watching his dad coach North Brunswick, you can find Gregor in a tree stand, hunting with his dad, or spending time with his sister and mom.
