WILMINGTON — GE Hitachi Nuclear Energy (GEH) and GE Aviation announced raising nearly $410,000 during the annual fall campaign to support the United Way of the Cape Fear Area. The funds go to charities selected by the United Way of the Cape Fear Area in Brunswick, Columbus, New Hanover and Pender counties.

“Through giving, volunteering and leadership, GE employee support of the United Way of the Cape Fear Area is improving lives and communities,” said Jay Wileman, president and CEO of GEH. “Many of our employees are lifelong residents of the area and believe in the importance of supporting the pillars of the United Way mission to improve education, financial stability and health.”

Contributions by GE Wilmington employees represent approximately 20 percent of the funds raised during the United Way of the Cape Fear Area’s annual campaign. In addition to payroll pledges, GE employees raised money by participating in a golf tournament, car show and parking spot auction.

“We are pleased that GE Hitachi continues to be the largest campaign in the Cape Fear Area.” said Chris Nelson, President at United Way of the Cape Fear Area. “These funds will be used by 38 local programs and initiatives to change over 27,000 lives next year.  United Way could not achieve the community impact it does without the generous support of the company and its employees.”

GE Wilmington supports the community through a variety of volunteer and charitable efforts. Each year GE Wilmington employees, family and friends volunteer more than 6,000 hours to support local community service events and programs including Work on Wilmington and Surfers Healing.

Nationwide, GE employees and retirees support nearly 600 United Way chapters and many other charities through annual giving campaigns.
