HS Hoops: Laney boys, girls down Pender; Perkins pours in 24 points for North Brunswick girls

Boys basketball

Laney  68   Pender 54

 The Bucs grabbed back-to-back wins for the first time this season following a 68-54 result against Pender. Laney was down by three with under three minutes to play in the first half before grabbing a 28-24 advantage at the break.

Chris Bennett led the way with 28 points. He dropped 24 over the final 16 minutes, while Sherod Sidbury chipped in with 10 to give Laney a 4-3 overall mark.

West Brunswick 70   North Brunswick 43

Coming off a win on a late bucket by Brandyn Parker the day prior, West Brunswick got off to a strong start at home Friday night against North Brunswick as the Trojans rolled to a 70-43 victory in Shallotte.

North 6-5-16-16=43

West 19-15-21-15=70

West Bladen 51   South Brunswick 45

Trailing by double figures moving into the fourth quarter, South Brunswick was able to cut the deficit to within two possessions with under 90 seconds to go. But, West Bladen was hang on down the stretch to hand the Cougars its first defeat of the season, 51-45, on Friday night.

South Brunswick was down by as many as 11 with four minutes to go in regulation before Keyshawn Jenkins helped bring the Cougars back. Jenkins is seen above knocking down a baseline runner to cut the lead to 44-40, with 1:20 to play.

South Brunswick dropped to 5-1 heading into its conference opener against Ashley on Dec. 13.

Girls basketball

Laney 37     Pender 15

Lexi Melville paced the Bucs with 15 points on Friday night as Laney defeated Pender 37-15.

The Scorpions overcame a slow first half and broke open a tie game over eight minutes during third quarter action en route to a 50-38 victory against West Brunswick. North Brunswick moved to 8-0 overall to remain unbeaten in non-conference play.

With things knotted 15-all at the break, the Scorpions outscored West Brunswick 24-10 in the third quarter to grab momentum. Taylor Perkins scored 21 of her team-high 24 points during the second half push. Perkins finished 12-of-17 from the free throw line.

Jada Bellamy added 11 points in the win as North Brunswick pulled down 21 rebounds in the win.

Fayetteville Academy 47   Coastal Christian 26

Sam Stanko knocked down three treys in the game for Coastal Christian to finish with a team-high 13 points.

Friendship Christian 53    Wilmington Christian 28

Abby Squires recorded a double-double for Wilmington Christian on Friday night with 18 points and 12 rebounds. Caroline Leggett added six points in the effort, while Sydney Davenport pulled down seven boards.
