SOUTHPORT — Grace Marie Montemurno Carberry, 75, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loved ones on Saturday, Dec. 3, 2016, due to a short illness.

She was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., on May 4, 1941, and spent time in her early childhood in both Brooklyn and Queens, N.Y. She was the daughter of Pasquale and Marie Montemurno of Fairlawn, N.J.

Grace obtained her degree in elementary education from Seton Hall University in 1963. Grace spent most of her adult life raising her family in Sparta, N.J., where she was a beloved teacher for 36 years. She enjoyed teaching young children, and taught a variety of age groups, but her true passion was in teaching 1st grade. In fact, she was awarded teacher of the year in the Sparta Township School District, which is a distinguished honor. Her love for teaching continued even after retirement, during which she extended her service and dedication as a volunteer for an additional four years, by providing reading support to children at Southport Elementary School.

Grace is survived by her husband of 53 years, Thomas Carberry, as well as two brothers and one sister. She also leaves behind her daughter and son-in-law, Marie and Jim Morris of Westfield, N.J.; and her son and daughter-in-law, Patrick and Trish Carberry of Katonah, N.Y. She is the grandmother of five adoring grandchildren, Kevin, Katie, John, Brendan and Ryan. Grace was always smiling, was loved by many, and was known to be a very generous woman.

She donated to a variety of charities, including the St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital and St. Joseph’s Indian School. In addition, she was an active member in her parish, Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Southport, and took part in the church’s bereavement and craft committees. In her free time, Grace loved to travel with her family and tend to her beautiful garden at her home.

The family will have a prayer service at 5 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 7, at Peacock-Newnam & White Funeral Home. The family will receive friends following the service until 7 p.m. at the funeral home. The family will also have a viewing from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Dec. 9, at Van Emburgh-Sneider-Pernice, 109 Darlington Ave., Ramsey, NJ 07446. A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 10, at The Church of the Immaculate Conception, 900 Darlington Ave., Mahwah, NJ 07430.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made in Grace’s honor to the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital; 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
