Wilmington, NC – November 1, 2016 –SECU Lakeside Reserve, a 40-apartment affordable housing project of Good Shepherd Center, recently announced a $100,000 gift from the Bruce Barclay Cameron Foundation.
Pledged over two years, the Foundation has further shown its support of this project by challenging Good Shepherd to raise an additional $100,000. Gifts received in the amount of $5,000 and above will be matched dollar for dollar by the Foundation, up to a maximum of $100,000. “We are deeply honored and humbled by this incredible support and very grateful to the Foundation and its Board of Directors for their overwhelming generosity,” said Reid and Linda Murchison, co-chairs for the Lakeside capital campaign.
“We are inspired to reach out to the community and have their gifts doubled by the Bruce Barclay Cameron Foundation,” said Katrina Knight, Good Shepherd’s Executive Director. “We know our donors and friends will be equally inspired now that their gifts will go twice as far toward providing a solution to homelessness,” she added.
“The Bruce Barclay Cameron Foundation Inc. is pleased to provide a grant for the construction of a very needed affordable housing community called the Good Shepherd’s SECU Lakeside Reserve,” said Scott Sullivan, President of the Foundation. “The Foundation’s Directors try to stimulate charitable giving by issuing challenge grants for projects that help change people’s lives in fundamental ways,” Sullivan added.
“With the success of the challenge match, and the outright grant from the Foundation, this gift has the potential of reaching $300,000,” said Jane Birnbach, Senior Development Director at Good Shepherd Center. “It brings us closer to our final goal for this project and we are deeply grateful to those who have recognized the importance of affordable housing in our community,” she added.
Thanks to the incredible support from the community including individuals, businesses, foundations and congregations, as well as a $1 million commitment from State Employees’ Credit Union, nearly $4 million has been raised in public and private support allowing the project to break ground this past August. The first phase will include 16 of the total 40 units plus common space including offices, lobby, kitchen, and shared laundry facilities. Construction began in September.
