NEW HANOVER COUNTY — The New Hanover County Senior Resource Center is offering free counseling to New Hanover County residents in order to educate seniors on the available Medicare options.

Open Enrollment for Medicare Part D is from Oct. 15 until Dec. 7. During open enrollment, the Senior Resource Center has Seniors’ Health Insurance Information Program (SHIIP) counselors available on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m, according to a notice from the county.

“This is such an important program for our seniors, and a great opportunity for them to sit down and talk with a certified, knowledgeable counselor,” said Amber Smith, Senior Resource Center director. “Our goal is to educate seniors on all of the options available to them, so that they can make an informed choice moving forward.”

Open enrollment allows anyone currently enrolled in Medicare the opportunity to review their plans and supplements, and determine if anything needs to be changed for the coming year. In addition, anyone close to retirement or new to Medicare can learn about the different plans and supplements available to them during this time. The plans become effective Jan. 1, 2017.

Appointments are required and are filling up quickly. Anyone interested is encouraged to call 910-798-6407 to schedule an appointment. Seniors outside of New Hanover County can search for their county’s SHIIP office at www.ncdoi.com.
