Nationally ranked Oklahoma women’s golf team takes early lead at 15th Annual Landfall Tradition

WILMINGTON— Eight of the top 25 teams in the most recent GolfStat rankings (Oct. 25) teed off on Friday at the 15th Annual Landfall Tradition held on the Pete Dye Course at the Country Club of Landfall.

The No. 23 Oklahoma women’s golf team came out of the gate strong, finishing at the top of the leaderboard after round one. The Sooners shot a 284 (-4) to tie their best round of the season.

Three-time Landfall Tradition winner, No. 13 Wake Forest, currently sits in second place at 288 (E) followed by No. 12 Purdue (291; +3). No. 20 UCF and No. 1 Alabama share fourth place at 293 (+5).

Oklahoma junior Hannah Wood fired a three-under, 69, on the par-72, 6,166-yard to lead the 96-player field. Wood now owns four rounds in the 60s this fall. Classmate Valerie Tanguay joined Wood in the top five of the leaderboard with a share of second place at 70 (-2).

Sophomore Cheyenne Knight of Alabama is ranked second in this week’s GolfStat rankings. She is also one shot back from the individual lead.

UNCW golfer Kayla Thompson shot a three-over-par 75 to lead the Seahawks during the opening round. UNCW completed the first round with a 307 team score hold the 15th position in the team standings.

Thompson posted two of the Seahawks’ eight birdies in the opening round en route to a share of 37th place.

Play continues at The Landfall Tradition with second round action on Saturday morning. The Seahawks will tee off from the 10th hole beginning at 9:15 a.m. The event is free and open to the public.
