PINEHURST— Laney High School standout Caroline Cahill is in the hunt for an individual title after the UNC-Wilmington commit fired a two-over-par, 72, on Monday during the opening round of the two day North Carolina High School Athletic Association (NCHSAA) 4A Championship being held at Pinehurst No. 5.
Cahill scored a pair of bogeys on the front nine after teeing off around 8 a.m. in the lead group and sat three-over before carding birdie on the par-4, 311 yard 12th hole. A second birdie on the par-3, 121 yard 15th put her just one stroke from even par, but Cahill bogeyed the par-5, 17th to close her round, 74, on the par-72, 5,709 yard layout.
The Laney golfer is three shots off the pace, tied-fifth heading into the final round of this year’s state championship.
Jenny Chang of Athens Drive High School sits atop the leader board after firing a one-under-par, 71.
Chang battled through an up and down round, with four birdies to go along with three bogeys. She birdied two par fours, the 315-yard 4th hole and the 350 yard 16th, as well as the par 5, 17th hole and par 3, sixth hole.
Jayla Rogers (Laney) is seven-over-par at plus-seven (79), tied for 17th place among the 78 golfers in the field. She started off the morning round with a triple-bogey on the opening hole of the day, but picked up her lone birdie on the par-5, 420 yard 17th hole. Hoggard’s Anna Moore hit 89 (+17), tied for 48th.
