WILMINGTON – With the customary smoke, colored lights and a penchant for the unpredictable, Midnite Madness rang in the new season for the UNCW men’s and women’s basketball teams on Friday night at Trask Coliseum.

For the 26th season, the Seahawks, who have already been practicing for two weeks, put their skills on display publicly for a large turnout of students and community followers on their home court.

When the clock struck 9:30 p.m., Kevin Keatts and Adell Harris introduced their teams to the 2,500-plus crowd at Trask Coliseum and the fun began.

Seahawk Nation was entertained with performances by the UNCW Cheerleaders and UNCW Dance Team, as well as a variety of games, shooting contests and dunks.

Following several contests and a special introduction, the teams captivated the Teal and Blue clad supporters. Newcomer Ambrose Mosley of the men’s team edged Jenny DeGraaf of the women’s squad in a tight three-point shooting competition. In the always popular dunk contest, red shirt sophomore Ty Taylor won the competition with a spinning dunk on the west end of Trask Coliseum.

The men’s team entertains Mount Olive on Sunday, Nov. 6, in its lone exhibition game. Both clubs play their regular season opener on Friday, Nov. 11, when the women take on Norfolk State at 4:30 p.m. and the men battle Claflin at 7:30 p.m.
