CAROLINA BEACH — Dogs of all breeds, sizes, and colors – many of them in costumes – were at Carolina Beach Lake Park on Saturday for the 8th Annual Salty Paws Festival.
The yearly event is held to raise money for local animal rescues, many of which had booths at the fest. A silent auction with dozens of items, including several gift baskets, was set up to raise money for the groups.
There were also vendors selling arts, crafts, clothing and other items, both for humans and pets, as well as food and drink vendors. The Brunswick County and New Hanover County Sheriff’s Departments were also represented with some of their deputies and members of their animal service units. The festival didn’t just feature dogs, as some of the rescue groups brought cats, rabbits and other animals as well.
The highlight of the event was the dog costume contest, which drew over 30 entries. Big, medium and small-sized dogs were dressed in everything from a sea turtle to Beetlejuice to a “traveling hippie” complete with a mini version of a classic Volkswagen van. The winners of the contest were two dogs wearing feathered wings who represented the “Lake Park ducks,” waterfowl that used to live at Carolina Beach Lake. The winners won $250.
