Laney football continues to roll in shutout over Topsail

HAMPSTEAD — Heading into Friday’s conference opener the Laney football team was riding high coming off back-to-back victories and the Bucs continued its recent run with a dominating performance on both sides of the ball on Friday en route to a 42-0 shutout over Topsail in Hampstead.

With the result, Laney extended its win streak to three straight, improving to 1-0 in conference and 4-2 overall. Topsail has now dropped three consecutive games, falling to 0-1 in league play and 2-4 on the year.

With nearly 200 yards on the ground against Topsail, Watkins has now had over 100 yards rushing for four times this season. The senior running back finished with four total touchdowns in the win, including three trips to the end zone in the first half.

Big plays plagued the Pirates in weeks past and Laney set the tone early as Alfayihm Walcott rumbled in from 27 yards out for his first touchdown of the season just four minutes into the ballgame. An 80-yard touchdown pass from Sherod Sidbury to Imeek Watkins put the Bucs on cruise control midway through the opening period and Laney never looked back.

Sidbury made it 22-0 with a 22 yard score early in the second quarter, while Justin Billingslea capped the effort with a touchdown late in the game. Laney posted its first shutout of the season and has now allowed just 14 points over its current three-game win streak.

The Bucs (1-0, 4-2) face South Brunswick on Friday, Sept. 30. Topsail (0-1, 2-4) heads to West Brunswick.
