WILMINGTON – A GoFundME page has been started for the family of a six-year-old who was abducted but found alive earlier this week.

The organizer of the page, Norma Rivera, did not immediately responded to a request for information, however the page’s connection to the family of Stefanny Lopez-Castro has been verified by the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office. By Friday afternoon, more than $6,000 had been donated.

Though the website’s comment section, Rivera said the money would go toward medical expenses and therapy. The girl was found alive and alone in a heavily wooded section of Carolina Beach Road about 15 hours after she had been kidnapped in broad daylight from her driveway.

The district attorney’s office will not confirm the details of how the girl was found, but the suspect, 46-year-old Douglas Edwards, a registered sex offender who has served time in jail for sexually assaulting a six-year-old in 1996, has been charged with sexual assault in this case.

The family released a statement from the hospital on Thursday thanking the community for its support and help in locating the girl, as well as asking for privacy.
