Hoggard 3 New Hanover 0
(25-22, 25-18, 25-17)
Things didn’t come easy early in Tuesday’s match for the Hoggard volleyball team at Brogden Hall, but once the Vikings seized control with a 25-22 win in game one, Hoggard rolled to a straight set sweep against New Hanover.
As three-time defending Mideastern Conference Champions, Hoggard extended its unbeaten streak in league play to 40 straight games dating back to late in the 2012 season. The Vikings improved to 5-3 overall and 3-0 in conference this year. Meanwhile, New Hanover suffered its first defeat of the fall, dropping to 1-1 in the division and 5-1 overall.
In game one, the Wildcats led most of the way until a service error and attacking error late in the set gave Hoggard a window of opportunity. With the score tied 22-all, Camille Whitlock recorded a pancake to keep the volley alive and Madie Schider’s acrobatic play gave the Vikings a one-point edge. Hoggard ran off five straight points during the stretch en route to a 25-22 victory.
The Vikings never trailed after the key points late in the first game and used a strong all-around effort to pick up the result. Kirby Smith recorded 10 of her team-high 16 kills in the final two games, including six kills in the decisive third set to pace the attack. Sophomore Paige Corrigan and senior Kim Lucas provided presence at net, while Mae Rowley and Samantha Shuffler were consistent in transition.
Essence Newkirk keyed New Hanover early on, while Alysssa Gowdy played a strong match at outside hitter for the Wildcats.
Both teams return to action later this week. New Hanover plays at Topsail on Thursday. Hoggard travels to Ashley.
