WILMINGTON – Sarah Bagley Fleming Jones died peacefully at home on Sept. 2, 2016.
She was born Oct. 13, 1927, in Pikeville, North Carolina, the daughter of Robert Loyd Fleming and Clara Lorraine Morris.
She graduated from Meredith College in 1948 with a bachelor of science in biology. Following college, she married the love of her life, William Robert Jones, an up-and-coming family physician. As a resident of Rocky Mount, North Carolina, for over 50 years, she was an active member of the Women’s Medical Auxiliary and The Junior Guild as well as longtime volunteer of Sub Deb Club. She was an avid gardener, phenomenal cook, swanky dancer and outstanding wedding coordinator. She will be remembered as a loving wife, mother, and friend.
She is preceded in death by her devoted husband of 57 years, Dr. William Robert Jones; brother, James Morris Fleming; and sister, Leah Fleming Bowman.
She is survived by her brother, Robert Loyd Fleming, Jr.; sister, Ollie Fleming Fornecker; and twin sister, Susan Fleming Patterson.
She is also survived by her seven children, William Robert Jones Jr. and wife Pamm of Wilmington; Charles Fleming Jones and wife Kathy of Atlanta, Georgia; Sarah Anne Seawell and husband Ronald of Wrightsville Beach, North Carolina; Lorraine Ferguson Ingles and late husband McClanahan of Gloucester, Virginia; Kathryn Vassar Clayton and husband Jeffrey of Charlotte, North Carolina; Martha Bagley McCarty and husband William of Charlotte; and Amy Frances Godwin and husband Richard of Wake Forest, North Carolina. Also surviving her are 20 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held 12:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 10, at Sunset Hill Cemetery in Littleton, North Carolina.
