Panthers' logoIf you are wondering what type of team the Carolina Panthers will field in 2016, Friday’s contest against the New England Patriots is your best chance to find out before the season starts.  That is according to the longtime voice of the Panthers, announcer Forest Orion Mixon III, who spoke to the team’s Wilmington affiliate and Port City Daily’s sister station, The Dude, heard on your FM dial at 93.7 and 106.3.

Better known as “Mick” Mixon, the man who has watched the team closely since 2005 joins The Port City Morning Show with host Linda Wylde each Monday during football season, with the exception of holidays.

This week, Mixon and Wylde touched on the team’s 26-16 road win over the Tennessee Titans on Saturday and the Cam Newton-led offense.

Mixon particularly noted the comfort level the starting quarterback had with his offense two weeks into the new season.

“Where we are right now as a football team is improving,” Mixon said. “The Baltimore game (week one) featured some good things; this another good step forward.

“Cam Newton not only was very accurate, he spread the ball around,” Mixon said.

Mixon also talked about the depth of the offensive line and the return of corner back Bene Benwikere, who was injured playing against Atlanta last December.

Given the traditional NFL pre-season, Mixon expects Panthers’ and Patriots’ starters to play at least the first full half of the game on Friday. Though, with Tom Brady facing a four-game suspension, that could mean Patriots’ back-up Jimmy Garoppolo will be the play-caller for New England.

“If you want to see the best, press your face against the window of what the 2016 Panthers are going to look like, this is going to be the contest,” Mixon said.
