Elizabeth Burton Kerr, 95, taught her family the importance of hospitality

Elizabeth Burton Kerr of Castle Hayne passed to her next life on Friday, August 12, 2016 at Cornelia Nixon Davis Rehab Center. She was 95.

She was born on March 27, 1921 in New Hanover County, one of 11 children. She was the daughter of the late Nannie Shaw Burton and James Brown Burton Sr. Elizabeth has one living sister, Ruth Swart of Bradenton, Florida, who will be 100 years old in one month. Elizabeth was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence Graham Kerr Sr. and they were married 66 years. Her living in-laws are John Kerr of Florida, Dorothy Richard of Wilmington, Margaret Kerr of Florida, Vera Burton of Castle Hayne, Mary Manning of Wilmington, Doris Kerr of Alabama and William Rivenbark of Castle Hayne. They had three children: the late Hazel Elizabeth Kerr Mathews and two living children, Clarence Graham (Butch) Kerr Jr. and spouse, Joyce H. Kerr and Beverly Kay Kerr Stanley and son-in-law Lee R. Stanley (Randy). She also has a son-in-law Jerry Earl Mathews and wife, Emiliy. She was blessed with seven grandchildren: Jennifer Mathews (Becky), Jeremy Mathews ( Marianella), Graham Kerr III (Mamie), Wendy Rambach (Tom), Nora Paige Stanley (James), Kimberly Blair Stanley Gomez (Larry) and Kelley Elise Stanley (Reese).

She had seven great grandchildren: Ellie and Landen Kerr, Hannah and Hayley Rambach, Bella Marshburn, Paz Mathews and Annabelle Conway.

At Elizabeth’s death, she was one of the oldest living members of Wrightsboro Baptist Church.

Mrs. Kerr was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend and was loved by all in her community. She stayed surrounded with numerous dedicated nieces and nephews and extended family who faithfully visited her and her caregiver, Bertha.

She was well known for her cooking and pound cakes. She shared and tried to feed everyone who walked in her back door. She taught her family the importance of hospitality and unconditional love that will remain in our hearts and lives on.

The celebration for Mama Kerr (Meme) will be held at Wrightsboro Baptist Church at noon on Tuesday, August 16, 2016. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to noon, two hours before the service. Burial will be at Bethany Presbyterian Church Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Graham Kerr III, Jeremy Mathews, James Conway, Tom Rambach, Larry Gomez, Reese Bower and Landen Kerr.

In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to the Building Fund for Wrightsboro Baptist Church, Lower Cape Fear Hospice, Cornelia Nixon Davis Rehabilitation Center, or the Topsail Senior Center.

Our hearts are full of love and gratitude to everyone that has helped us through this journey. She has been surrounded with love. She shared all she had, and touched every life she met.
