WILMINGTON — Police are investigating the death of a 29-year-old man who was shot near New Hanover High School’s football practice field Wednesday evening.

Roderick Jinwright, of Wilmington, was killed in a shooting in the 1200 block of Ann Street at about 6:15 p.m., according to Wilmington Police Department Spokeswoman Linda Rawley. Police say they responded to a ShotSpotter alert and “numerous” shots fired calls in the area.

Jinwright was found lying in the grass at the corner of 13th and Ann streets, Rawley said. Citizens tried to render aid to the victim until officers and EMS arrived on scene.

The victim was taken to New Hanover Regional Medical Center where he was pronounced dead. Police have now opened a homicide investigation and are working to identify suspects, Rawley said.

No one else was injured in the shooting, which happened near the athletic field located next to Gregory Elementary School and Williston Middle School. According to New Hanover County Schools Spokeswoman Valita Quattlebaum, the New Hanover High School football team was away at a scrimmage in Myrtle Beach at the time of the shooting.

“The district has decided that law enforcement will be present during the times of football practice. They will be there from now on whenever the students practice at 13th and Ann Streets,” Quattlebaum said.
