Catherine Elizabeth “Betty” Evans Burney, 90, of Wilmington, N.C., died Thursday, Aug. 4, 2016, at New Hanover Regional Medical Center.
She was born Sept. 10, 1925, in Greensboro, N.C., the daughter of the late William Hasell Evans and Catherine Rebecca Martin Evans. She was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, John Jay Burney Jr., and two sisters, Lillian Heyward Wideman and Patricia Hampton Evan.
Mrs. Burney was a graduate of New Hanover High School, Class of 1944, and attended Wake Forest College. She was an active member of St. Andrews Covenant Presbyterian Church, a volunteer at the Women’s Shelter, and one of the founders of the Domestic Violence Shelter. She also was a family service reading teacher and child mentor who claimed that her biggest accomplishment was teaching a child to read.
Mrs. Burney was an emeritus member of the Cape Fear Garden Club, a charter member of the Wilmington Chapter of Ikebana International, and a master gardener. She was an avid bridge player for many years and was a volunteer for the Junior League.
She is survived by her children, Deborah Salinda Burney, John Jay Burney III (Zina) and William Shaw Burney; her granddaughters, Elizabeth Christina Burney Van Name (Erik), Anna Catherine Burney, Mary Margaret Burney and Rebecca Lynn Burney; a great-granddaughter, Aurora Elizabeth Van Name; a brother-in-law, Louis A. Burney (Bonnie); nephews, Louis A. Burney Jr. (Stephanie) and Chris Wideman (Janet); nieces, Eugenia Burney Smith (Xan), Kleist Rhodes (Tommy); and many other nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
Memorial services will be at 11 a.m., Monday, Aug. 8, 2016, at St. Andrews Covenant Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Robert Lapp officiating. Private interment will be at Oakdale Cemetery.
