WILMINGTON- High school football teams are working through the initial days of practice as local programs are now in full pads ahead of scrimmages and the 30th BB&T Jamboree at Legion Stadium on Friday, Aug. 12.

In Monkey Junction, the Ashley Screaming Eagles have been out for workouts early each morning as participation numbers have increased heading into the second season under Coach Jeff Turner. Turner was excited about the possibilities of his team after a strong offseason of workouts, through weight lifting programs, 7-on-7 camps and the first full week on the practice field.

Ashley has struggled to gain traction on the gridiron over the years, but a group of core players, including key returners Bradley Plyer, Caleb Parker, Freddie Thames and Joseph Barbera represents what could be a new era of Screaming Eagles’ football.

The garnet and gold will likely have a new quarterback under center this year as Parker looks to play both sides of the ball at receiver and safety. Barbera had a big impact on the defensive line last season and expect the junior to play another huge role in stuffing the run. Plyer’s hard running style between the tackles and Thames athletic ability should also provide Ashley with a mentality rarely seen in Monkey Junction on Friday nights.
