Jack Balk, 91, former superintendent at Babcock and Wilcox

WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH – Jack Balk, 91, passed away of natural causes at his home on Saturday, July 30, 2016, under the care of his immediate family members.

Mr. Balk was born on June 2, 1925, in Brooklyn, N.Y., the son of Meyer and Dorothy Reiss Balk. He had a twin brother and three sisters, all whom preceded him in death.

He was a proud U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. In 1952 he was married and moved to Wrightsville Beach, N.C., and began working at Babcock & Wilcox, where he retired as superintendent. He was known for his fishing stories and never saying no when friends and family members needed help.

Surviving is his beloved wife of 70 years, Sarah Shelley Balk; daughter, Linda Balk Skipper (Charles); son, Nathan Jack Godwin (Raymonde); four grandsons, Phillip and Robert Godwin, Chad Skipper (Sherri) and Kevin Skipper (Lori); seven great grandchildren, Nathan, Taylor and Cody Godwin,  and Austin, Morgan, Hailey and Corbin Skipper; niece, Sandy Yeager; and great-nieces, Melanie D’Elia, Lauren Javors and Samantha Marciano.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 5, 2016, at Andrews Mortuary, 4108 S. College Road, Wilmington, N.C. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 6, at the funeral  home. Burial, with full military honors, will follow at Oleander Memorial Gardens.
