WILMINGTON – Anna Yonick Sakash, of Wilmington, N.C., died Monday, Aug. 1, 2016, at her residence.
She was born Feb. 20, 1927, at home on a farm in Rayne Township, Penn., the daughter of the late Nick Yonick and Dorothy Choyk Yonick.
Mrs. Sakash completed her elementary education at Bell School, a one-room school, and graduated from Plumville High School in 1945. She was a graduate of Indiana Hospital in Pennsylvania as a registered nurse.
She married George Sakash in 1949 and pursued her nursing career in each town they lived in: Gainesville, Fla., Rome, Ga., and Columbia, S.C. In 1968 they moved to Wilmington, N.C., where she worked at Davis Healthcare as a private duty nurse.
Mrs. Sakash enjoyed canning, needlework, baking, cooking, gardening, dancing – especially the polka, and watching life and nature along the creek in her backyard. She was a kind, gracious person even after her dementia took away her speech. She was always happily humming.
Anna was preceded in death by her husband, George Sakash, and her brother, John Yonick.
She is survived by her children, Cathe Ford (Rick) of Hampstead, N.C., George Sakash (Janice) of Charleston, S.C., and Tom Sakash of Wilmington, N.C.; two grandchildren, Mark Acuri (Jen) of Wilmington, N.C., and Neal Sakash (Kate) of Hilton Head, S.C.; two great-grandchildren, Abby and Ben Acuri; and a sister, Catherine Ballow of Pennsylvania.
Private services will be held at a later date
