Kenneth “Kenny” Lee Smith, 77, formerly of Hamlet, North Carolina, passed away peacefully at his home in Oak Island, North Carolina, on Friday, July 22, 2016.

He was born April 30, 1939 in Hamlet, North Carolina, son of the late Warren Lee and Lucille Owens Smith.

Kenny grew up in Hamlet and graduated from Hamlet High School. After working on the railroad he worked as a lineman for BellSouth. He spent the majority of his career as a building industry consultant (a BICS engineer). He retired in 1991 and returned to work as a consultant for almost 10 years. He spent several years playing tennis, working on projects for his children and grandchildren and enjoying life. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Oak Island and attended New Life Church, where his longtime friend and brother in Christ Bobby Rea is pastor.

Kenny is survived by his wife, Mary Helen Jenkins Smith; their children, Kenny Lee Smith Jr. (Susan Harris Smith) and Laine Smith McKnight (Gary McKnight), all of Wilmington; two sisters, Effie Theresa Smith Pernell (Bobby Pernell) of Lake Gaston and Donna Kay Smith Wheeler of Raleigh; grandchildren, Sarah Nicole Smith of Romania, Mary Catherine Smith Bowman (Ben Bowman) of Richmond, Virginia, Elijah Lorenzo Smith, Dorothy Michelle Smith, Stephanie Logan McKnight and Morgan Brittnee McKnight, all of Wilmington, as well as six great-grandchildren.

A visitation will be held at 10 a.m. and the funeral service is to follow at 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 26, 2016 at Watson-King Funeral Home in Hamlet with Pastor Bobby Rea officiating. Entombment will follow at Richmond Co. Memorial Park.
