James L. Vaughan, 80, former Marine who worked in accounting

James L. Vaughan , 80, of Wilmington, passed peacefully at his home on July 12, 2016.

Born in West Palm Beach, Fla., on Nov. 5, 1935, he was the son of the late Palmetto Vaughan Jr. and Emma Vaughan Rourk. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his stepfather, Harry E. Rourk, and two sisters, Vashti Miller and Eva Mae Miller.

He proudly served in the U.S. Marine Corps and Reserve. Upon discharge, he graduated from Wilmington College and worked in the field of accounting.

Jim’s family was one of the most important things to him. He loved each and every one with all of his heart, always putting their needs ahead of his own.

Jim loved spending time making memories with his family and friends. He also enjoyed serving his Lord Jesus Christ through his many years of service in many capacities at Springview Free Will Baptist Church.

Jim is survived by the love of his life, Sylvia Wilson Vaughan. They were married on June 23, 1957.

Jim also is survived by his three children, Gery Vaughan (Donna), Keith Vaughan, and Kimberly Jones (Bob); grandchildren, Brittany Babb (Sean), Jameson Vaughan, Christina Vaughan, Ryan Jones (Jade), Christopher Jones (Michelle), and Brooke Jones; three great-grandchildren, Auston Main, Alex Thomas and Ronan Babb; sisters, Emma Kitzinger and Edna Lynn; and many nephews and nieces.

Visitation will be from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Saturday, July 16, at Springview Free Will Baptist Church, 801 N. College Road, Wilmington, N.C. A funeral service will follow the visitation, with the Rev. Charles Heath and the Rev. Preston Heath officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Springview Free Will Baptist Church or a charity of the donor’s choice.
