Rachel Eakins Shilling, 91, of Wilmington, N.C., died Tuesday, July 5, 2016, at Frye Regional Medical Center in Hickory, N.C.

She was born March 16, 1925, in Pender County, N.C., the daughter of the late Thomas Dewey Eakins and Nora Bell Aman Eakins. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Shilling Jr., brother, Tom Eakins; and sister, Espy Pesaturo.

Rachel grew up on a farm in Pender County. She attended East Carolina University before going to work in the Wilmington shipyards during World War II. She later worked at Tidewater Electric. Rachel met and married the love of her life, Bob Shilling, in 1952. In addition to being a loving daughter and sister, she became a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

She is survived by two daughters, Patricia Shilling Guffey (Randy), of Efland, N.C. and Margaret Shilling Schultz (Tom), of Hickory, N.C.; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and sister, Lois Watt.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, July 8, 2016, at Andrews Mortuary, 1617 Market St., Wilmington, N.C. A graveside funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 9, 2016, at the Eakins Family Cemetery in Pender County, near Shiloh, N.C., with Rev. Betty Helms officiating.
