Jean Frances Taylor, 78, of Wilmington, N.C. passed away on Tuesday July 5, 2016, at Lower Cape Fear Hospice & LifeCareCenter.

She was the daughter of the late Lee M. Taylor and Dorothy H. Taylor. She was preceded in death by housemates Martha Cromartie and Sue Brown.

Jean was a graduate of New Hanover High School. She graduated from Greensboro College with an A.B. in social studies. She earned her master’s degree in mathematics from the University of South Carolina.

She taught math at John T. Hoggard High School most of her career. She also taught at Williston Senior High, Roland Grise Junior High, and the University of North Carolina-Wilmington. In 1983, she received the Mathematics and Teaching Award from John T. Hoggard High School. She was presented with the National Presidential Award for Excellence in Science and Mathematics Teaching in 1987 at the White House in Washington, D.C.

Jean loved her students. She volunteered numerous hours tutoring students in math (and life). She also volunteered at the Wilmington Senior Center to complete annual tax forms. Jean loved playing bridge, assembling puzzles and watching/feeding every critter in the neighborhood. She had a passion for animals, with a special love for every pet.

She enjoyed a lifetime of traveling with friends to all the continents of the world. She was a member of Winter Park Presbyterian Church. Her contributions and service to people and animals helped make the world a better place. She will be loved and missed by all.

Jean is survived by her brother, Donald L. Taylor (Jeri); nephew, Gregory Taylor (Sonja); grandnephews, Scott (Carrie) and Donald Lewis (Coral); grandnieces, Heather (LaMont) and Tiffany Lewis (Justin); great-grandnephews, Blaine, Rhys, Tobin, Remington and Jacob; niece, Kimberly Lewis;  great-grandniece Bella; aunt, Cecile B. Edwards; and cousins, Jim Edwards and Bob Edwards.

A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Friday July 8, 2016, at the Winter Park Presbyterian Church, with a reception to follow.
