Brown replaces Jason Bentzler, who was reassigned after just one season at the helm. Bentzler served as longtime assistant under Aaron Livengood before being selected for the head coaching position when Livengood decided to part ways with the program to take a job in administration.

Laney was 0-12 in conference and 4-19 overall under Bentzler.

Brown most recently served as head coach at West Charlotte High School. He also played college baseball at Wingate University and was picked in the 18th round of the 2005 Major League Baseball Draft by the New York Mets. He served as a pitching coach at Wingate in 2011 and 2013 before heading to West Charlotte.
